About the Book

The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia
is a 1260 page hard cover book. Dr. John C. Lowe wrote the book for patients, physicians, and scientists. His purpose was to provide them with the ultimate reference book on fibromyalgia, its relation to abnormally slow metabolism, and effective metabolic treatment.

The four-color cover contains images of thyroid hormone molecules. Dr. Lowe drew the originals, and artists Rachel Letcher and Brenda Howell refined and finished the drawings. Brenda Howell was the cover artist for the book.

The price of the book, $99.95, is unusually low for a medical book of the size and quality of The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia. We've struggled to keep the price as low as possible to make it available to as many patients, physicians, and scientists as possible.

Dr. John C. Lowe worked full time for several years on The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia. His medical editor of over ten years, Jackie Yellin, worked with him. She served as his reasoning springboard and helped organized the massive text.

To support the validity of his views, Dr. Lowe studied and referenced in the book some 6,000 published research reports and books. Many fields of research and medical practice are represented by the papers and books. They include cell physiology, general systems physiology, genetics, biochemistry, metabolism, endocrinology, thyroidology, rheumatology, neurology, behavioral and neural sciences, laboratory medicine, nutrition, logic, and science philosophy.

Making the Book Understandable

One of Dr. Lowe's most challenging tasks in writing the book was to include extremely complex scientific information in language that's reasonably understandable. With the help of his editors and proofreaders, he did an exceptional job at accomplishing this task.

If you are concerned about whether you can understand most of the book, we suggest you read Dr. Lowe's Introduction to the book or an award-winning excerpt we've made available. If you find his Introduction understandable, you're likely to find most of the book equally understandable.

Dr. Lowe originally wrote The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia for physicians and scientists. However, he and his editors and proofreaders worked diligently for several years to make most of the book understandable for the well-read patient. To make the contents more comprehensible, Dr. Lowe provided definitions within the text of the book. He also provided an extensive glossary, and he used plain language as much as possible. The average well-read patient should find most of the chapters easy to understand. We advise patients to have a relatively new medical dictionary at hand. If patients, physicians, or scientists have questions while reading the book, Dr. Lowe will provide answers by e-mail. (For convenience, his e-mail address is in the front of the book at the end of his Introduction.)

Of course, some of the information in the book is simply too complex to explain without using technical language and concepts. This is especially true of the chapters on genetics and cell and molecular biology. Even with extraordinarily good writing skills, the language and concepts in these few chapters could be simplified only so much. However, this qualification doesn't apply to most of the chapters in the book. Especially important is this: The chapters in which Dr. Lowe explains basic concepts, diagnosis, and treatment are the easiest to understand. Equally understandable are the chapters in which he makes sense of the wide array of symptoms and signs patients suffer from.
