This page and the next two contain the images from the cover of The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia. Dr. John C. Lowe conceptualized and drew the images. Graphic artist Rachel Letcher refined and colored them. Graphic artist Brenda Howell further refined the image and finalized the cover of the book.

The image below is from the front cover of The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia. It is a stylized drawing of two thyroid hormone molecules and a portion of a helical chromosome.

The coiled, horseshoe-shaped ribbons represent chromosomes. The chromosomes contain the genes that regulate the function of our cells. Stationed on many genes are protein molecules called T3-receptors. Binding of a T3 molecule to a T3-receptor stimulates the activity of some genes and represses the activity of others. This process must occur normally if we are to enjoy normal physical and mental function. If enough T3 does not reach and bind normally to T3-receptors, the involved tissues undergo a metabolic slow-down. Dr. Lowe argues in The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia that in most patients, the set of symptoms we call "fibromyalgia" results from such a slow-down in fibromyalgia-specific tissues.

The nestling of the front molecule in the concave side of the chromosome symbolizes the action of thyroid hormone on the transcription of genes. The separation of the front red sphere represents the removal of one iodine atom by the enzyme deiodinase. Removal of the atom changes the molecule from T4 (with four iodine atoms) to T3 (with three iodine atoms). T3 is the most metabolically active form of thyroid hormone.
